The Northern Lights Over Dalriada Lodges

The light show appears when charged particles from the sun are dragged into the atmosphere by the earth’s magnetic field and collide with nitrogen and oxygen atoms. This collision releases flashes of coloured lights – which we see as the Northern Lights.

The lights, which are also called Aurora Borealis, show up at night when the sky is dark. It’s like a celestial snakes of light dancing across the night sky, with a colour palette of green, blue, and sometimes even pink and violet.

The lights are potentially visible under dark skies from late August to mid-April preferably under a clear, cloudless sky. At Dalriada, the skies are perfect for viewing the stars in the night sky as we have minimal light pollution.

The sky conditions were ideal on Saturday 8th January 2022 and even through the lights of Stonehaven, the heavenly dancers were magnificent.

Jenny McLaren captured this amazing phenomenon below (you can even see the lights of Dalriada on the right hand side)
